COAL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Northumberland County police are investigating the attempted killing of a corrections officer at the state prison near Shamokin.

WNEP reports that an inmate put the officer in a choke hold in the prison yard Sunday morning and tried to slash the officer’s throat with a weapon.

The officer was able to fight the inmate off and suffered only minor injuries to his neck, face, head, hands and back. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

The inmate was transferred to another facility. No names have been released.
