ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Law enforcement officers are being disciplined after a man was able to bring a gun into the Metro Detention Center.
KOAT reports that Jacob Piggott was given a patdown, but three police officers and a correctional officer at the facility all missed a gun hidden in his waistband.
A metal-detecting wand also missed the gun. It wasn’t until Piggott was placed through a body scanner that the firearm was noticed.
“They did the search on him and Mr. Piggott had the gun in his private area, in his waistband, so the gun was missed at that point,” Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Officer Simon Drobik said.
The police officers involved have since been retrained and are back in the field.
The corrections officer is no longer working on inmate intake pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
