IONE, Calif. — An accomplice of a man convicted decades ago of killing 14 young men and boys then dumping their naked bodies along Southern California freeways has been killed in prison, officials said Thursday.
Gregory Miley, 54, died Wednesday after being attacked two days earlier by another inmate in an exercise yard at Mule Creek State Prison, state corrections department spokesman Joe Orlando said. Mule Creek houses about 3,000 inmates in Ione, about 40 miles southeast of Sacramento.
He was sent back to his cell after an examination at the prison’s medical facility, became unconscious about 90 minutes later and died at an outside hospital after he was taken off life support.
The death came just days after a state inspector general issued a scathing report saying Mule Creek provides poor medical care to inmates.
Miley was convicted in Los Angeles County in 1982 and Orange County in 1983 in the killing two boys, ages 14 and 12. He was serving two life sentences for assisting “Freeway Killer” William George Bonin, who was executed in 1996 by lethal injection for the string of killings in 1979 and 1980.
The victims, ages 12 to 19, were sexually abused, tortured and all but one was strangled. That victim, a 17-year-old German tourist, was stabbed about 70 times.
Miley and another accomplice, James Munro, testified against Bonin in exchange for lighter sentences.
Orlando couldn’t say why Miley was attacked or give details on the other inmate.
“It’s an ongoing investigation so we can’t say very much,” Orlando said.
Also Friday, prison officials announced the death of an inmate at a different prison.
Guards at Calipatria State Prison, 140 miles northeast of San Diego, pulled two injured inmates from their cell early May 19. One died Saturday at an outside hospital from injuries including bruising, swelling, cuts, collapsed lungs and a broken nose.
Orlando said officials delayed announcing the death and still are not releasing details including the inmate’s name because they have been unable to notify his relatives.
