GEORGETOWN, S.C. — An investigation is underway after an inmate attempted to escape during a prisoner transport, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on May 25 when the inmate inside a Georgetown County Detention Center transport unit attempted to grab a corrections officer’s firearm, according to the sheriff’s office. The officer deployed his TASER, but when it failed to subdue the inmate, he subsequently fired his duty weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.

The inmate was not struck during the incident, the sheriff’s office said.

The case is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The inmate, who was not named, remains in custody of the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
