CARSON CITY — U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Corrections reported Silver State Industries is planning a saddle-started wild horse adoption event at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

Up to 19 saddle-started wild horses trained by NNCC prisoners will be offered for adoption. The once-wild horses come from herd management areas in California, Nevada and Utah and range in age from 4 to 8 years old. They also vary in weight and color.

BLM reported that all the horses and one burro offered for adoption have received at least 120 days of training as part of the inmate training program.

“NNCC continues to do a great job training and showcasing these animals,” Ruth Thompson, the BLM Nevada wild horse and burro state leader, said. “I am excited for the upcoming saddle-trained adoption event. The horses and burro are coming along well with their training.”

The adoption event is at NNCC, 1721 Snyder Ave., south of Carson City. Public viewing begins at 9 a.m. (Feb. 22) and the competitive-bid event conducted by an auctioneer will follow at 10 a.m. The starting bid for all the animals is $150, the BLM said.

Potential adopters are asked to enter the prison from the north side and watch for signs and event personnel at the extreme south end of the facility directing event participants to the horse corrals and parking, according to the announcement.

No cellphones, cameras or recording devices can be used at the facility, and no form of tobacco can be used, the BLM said. The agency said directions from Reno include taking Interstate 580 south to South Carson Street and turning right. Turn right on Snyder Avenue ( Nevada State Route 518 ) and head east 1.5 miles. Turn right at the NNCC sign.
