CHATHAM, Va. — The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) hosted its first TEDx event at Green Rock Correctional Center, which is now streaming on YouTube.

Held on May 7, 2024, the event featured over 25 speakers and performers, including talks from individuals currently incarcerated, according to a news release from VADOC. Organized in collaboration with Proximity for Justice, the event highlighted stories of personal transformation, bridging societal gaps and the power of redemption.

Notable talks included Alejandro Ruiz’s “Bridging the Gap” and Terry Brown’s “From Victimizer to Victim.”

TEDx events are independently organized conferences inspired by TED Talks, which aim to promote the exchange of innovative and thought-provoking ideas, VADOC said.

VADOC Commissioner Chadwick Dotson emphasized the significance of such initiatives in providing a platform for those incarcerated to share their stories and create meaningful connections with the broader community.

“Since the Virginia Department of Corrections hosted this TEDx event back in May, corrections team members and others across Virginia have asked me when they could watch these important talks,” said Dotson. “I’m happy that the first session is now live, so that people can get a sense of just how special that day was for all in attendance. Thank you to Proximity for Justice, every speaker, and everyone who made this event such a success.”

This TEDx event marks a historic first for Virginia’s correctional system, as it seeks to expand rehabilitative opportunities through innovative educational programming.
