This week, Anthony Gangi and guest Gary Cornelius talk about the realities of the corrections industry versus how it’s viewed in shows like Orange is the New Black and others.
“Sometimes in the movies they make the jail people out to be brutal. I’ll give you an example -- there was a movie about 10 years ago called Face/Off,” Cornelius said. “I’ll tell you, I can’t remember the last time my jail used cattle prods or magnetic boots to keep the inmates under control.
“It translates to people not knowing what we do,” he concluded.
Cornelius went on to ask why the media is interested in following police around on the street, but then only show up at a jail when there’s an escape, or staff misconduct.
“The vast majority of correctional officers are well-trained, professional people,” Cornelius said. He also said that there were professionals who were more than happy to talk about the profession in order to better inform the public.
How do you think the public can be made more interested in corrections as a whole? Is there room for a more corrections-centered show that focuses on the officers? Sound off in the comments.
