BALDWIN, La. — Louisiana State Police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man who was shot with a stun gun by a city police officer after reportedly escaping custody.
State police spokesman Stephen Hammons says the victim’s identity is being withheld.
Hammons says Police Chief Gerald Minor asked state police to step in Friday morning, hours after the man was arrested on unspecified outstanding warrants. The Advocate reports the man escaped and was shot by an officer equipped with a Taser stun gun, which fires prongs that deliver an electrical charge, immobilizing a person.
Hammons says officers called emergency personnel. The man was transported to Franklin Foundation Hospital before being transferred to Lafayette General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
