SALT LAKE CITY — A legislative committee is moving closer to putting out bids for a new state prison facility.
The Deseret News reports the prison relocation committee agreed on details for a request for bids for a new prison. A subcommittee will review the proposal and report back at the committee’s Sept. 30 meeting.
State officials have for years been considering moving the Utah State Prison, which occupies 700 acres in Draper near companies such as Adobe and Microsoft Corp.
The committee heard from parents of an inmate Monday who asked that the new prison not be moved to a rural location so they can still visit.
Department of Corrections Executive Director Rollin Cook told the committee this is a common concern that needs to be included in any decision making process.
