As a follow up to a tip submitted by Officer Israel about looking at subjects when talking on shoulder mics [Read the tip]:
I have done what Officer Israel describes and I’ve also noticed that I tend to lift my elbow when using a shoulder mic, thereby exposing my unarmored underarm. I purchased a mic “tether” from Gear Keeper (there are other companies that sell them also) that allows me to utilize my shoulder mic without taking my eyes off a suspect or having to worry about where the mic is. It stays put, not wrapped around my knees, in a foot chase and I never have to lift my arm or take my eyes off a subject to transmit.
