SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The parolee who died after jumping out of a moving Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department patrol car was identified Saturday by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 29-year-old Ryan Ellis. A city of residence for Ellis was not listed on the coroner’s website.

The Sheriff’s Department said deputies picked up Ellis on Thursday night after receiving a call about a man who had violated a restraining order. He was found in the neighborhood of Galbrath Drive and Walerga Road in North Highlands near his estranged wife’s home, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release said. Authorities said he was a parolee-at-large, wanted for allegedly breaking the terms of his parole.

The 29-year-old was taken into custody, handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car to be driven to jail. While a deputy was driving on Watt Avenue near Elkhorn Boulevard, Ellis kicked out the rear window of the vehicle and jumped out the window as the car was moving, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Ellis suffered critical injuries to his head from the incident and was sent to the hospital. He was pronounced dead the next morning, department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull said. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
