SCHWENKSVILLE, Pa. — Correctional Officer David Weaver’s widow still doesn’t know the details behind how her husband was fatally injured in the prison yard of State Correctional Institute Graterford.

Weaver was an officer assigned to patrol the maximum-security prison, and no one can provide insight into how he fell and hit his head in September, Fox 29 reported.

According to the news station, the 13-year veteran was alone monitoring inmates playing football when he fractured his skull after striking his head on a concrete wall.

“My husband went to work and never came home,” Tara Weaver said. “I don’t want that to happen to someone else and to not be able to know – to have to live with the uncertainty I have to live with.”

There is no security camera footage and the DOC has not provided answers.

“I think they’re just sweeping it away like it doesn’t matter. And, to me, that’s not acceptable,” she said.

When asked why Weaver was alone in the yard, the DOC responded in a written statement.

“Officer Weaver was stationed in a single-officer post,”the DOC wrote. “All of the DOC institutions have single-officer posts. This is not uncommon.”

But Jason Bloom, president of the Pennsylvania State CO Association, said in his 24 years of experience he never walked a yard by himself because that makes officers sitting targets.

“Make my staff as safe as you possibly can,” he said. “If we had two people in the yard in this instance we would know exactly what happened — exactly.”

State police said they ruled Weaver’s death as an accident.

“I still don’t have a hundred percent closure as to what really happened, and I don’t think I ever will. And I still don’t have my husband,” Weaver said.
