BIRMINGHAM, UK— A prisoner cut a warder’s arm to the bone with a shard of glass from his smashed TV screen, a court heard.
Ahmed Sharif Jama Al-Sharif hid the glass for three days before launching the attack, it is alleged.
Two or three inches of glass were poking out of Al-Sharif’s fist when he rushed at prison officer Robert Belcham “in a frenzy” and delivered a blow to his left arm, causing a serious injury, prosecutor Jason Pegg said.
The prisoner is then alleged to have attacked three other officers who tried to restrain him, causing injuries including lacerations and a fractured finger.
The warder was confronted by Al-Sharif, 53, after unlocking his cell to give him food at HMP Birmingham.
The city’s Crown Court heard that five pieces of glass were left inside the inmate’s cell following an incident during which he smashed the set and punched a prison officer on November 4, 2012.
