This week’s episode talks about correctional officer suicide and how we can work together to prevent someone from choosing a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Host Anthony Gangi interviews guest Michael Pittaro, a 27-year criminal justice veteran.
“Research has found that a correctional officer will not live past his or her 59th birthday,” Pittaro said. “And the average life expectancy after retirement is about 18 months. The stress of this job has a domino effect where it will continue to affect you even after you’ve since retired.
“It’s damage -- physically, mentally, emotionally.”
Gangi and Pittaro talk about PTSD and how it affects correctional officers, how officers can help each other through peer support, the pitfalls of the negative environment officers work in every day and how they can create a positive environment at home.
