OSSINING, NY — A Sing Sing Correctional Facility officer has been hospitalized after an inmate grabbed him and placed him in a choke hold.

The Daily Voice reports that inmate Andre Terry was being returned from a disciplinary hearing while an officer was still in Terry’s cell removing the inmate’s personal belongings.

The officer left the cell to retrieve a bag for the items, and Terry entered the cell without permission.

The officer ordered Terry to leave the cell; in response, Terry reached through the cell door entrance and grabbed the officer around the head and neck.

Other officers responded and subdued Terry. He was placed in a special housing unit.

The injured officer was taken to a facility medical clinic before being transferred to Phelps Hospital for treatment.

He sustained injuries to his left and right ribs, neck pain and abrasions to his right hand.

Terry is serving a 17-to-20 year sentence after being convicted of second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
