COOK COUNTY, Ill. — A man awaiting trial for murder was charged with attacking a correctional officer as he was headed to court for a hearing recently, officials said Thursday.

Samuel Salas, 25, is charged with punching the officer multiple times in the head as he was being taken to his court hearing June 4, according to a news release issued by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Salas, of the 3800 block of North Nordica Avenue, was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer and ordered held Monday in lieu of $75,000 bail, officials said.

Salas was charged in January 2014 on multiple charges including murder.

The earlier charges are in connection with the shooting deaths of Alex Santiago, 24, and his girlfriend, Angelina Escobar, 19, in the 3500 block of West Sunnyside Avenue about 1 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2009.
