ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A correctional officer has been attacked at the North Carolina prison where four employees were killed last fall.

Public Safety Department spokesman Jerry Higgins said in a news release that an officer at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City was treated for non-life threatening injuries after being punched in the face by an inmate Thursday afternoon.

Higgins said no weapons were involved. He did not release the officer’s name.

Sheriff Randy Cartwright said it was a female officer who was attacked.

The inmate’s name has not been released.

Four prison employees were killed during an escape attempt in October. The four inmates involved in that attack have been charged with murder. State officials investigating the October attack concluded the prison was understaffed and did not always follow safety procedures.
