ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Six inmates are facing new charges after being accused of beating up a corrections officer last month.

According to a criminal complaint, the officer said he feared for his life after a Metropolitan Detention Center inmate kept punching him before five others jumped in. The inmate, identified as Jose Estrada, punched the officer in the face and stole his radio, KRQE.com reported. The officer punched back, but a group of inmates closed in on him and blocked the officer’s escape.

The officer ran, but two other inmates are accused of shoving the officer. The officer was eventually able to break free and get help, according to the report.

The inmates are facing multiple charges, including battery upon a peace officer and assault by a prisoner.
