ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Family and friends gathered on Sunday to remember a CO who was killed in the deadly Oct. 12 attempted prison escape in North Carolina.
WAVY reports that the memorial occurred at Elizabeth City State University. CO Wendy Shannon, 49, died of her injuries last Monday after the deadly escape attempt at Pasquotank County Correctional Institution. She was one of four employees who died from the attack.
“Out Hearts are broken at the passing of Officer Shannon” Erik A. Hooks, North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary, said in a release. “Our deepest condolences go out to the Shannon family during this difficult time.”
Shannon started her career with the DPS at the prison four years ago.
Four inmates involved in the failed prison escape face several charges, including two counts each of first-degree murder.
