ALGER, Mich. — A Michigan Department of Corrections officer was recognized by the Michigan State Police (MSP) for stepping in to help a trooper struggling to arrest a suspect along a highway in Alger County.
Jesse Freeman, an officer at Alger Correctional Facility, was on his way to work when he spotted an MSP trooper engaged in a physical altercation with a suspect resisting arrest on M-28. With backup still nearly an hour away, Freeman pulled over, ran to the scene, and helped bring the suspect into custody, ending the struggle.
For his actions, Freeman received the MSP “Pride of the Eighth” award in a ceremony at the Negaunee Post.
“After careful consideration of the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, it was decided your actions deserved recognition with a ‘Pride of the Eighth’ award for your selfless act, care and consideration of another civil servant’s well-being and success in the performance of his duties. I salute you for your outstanding work and commitment to public safety,” MSP Eighth District Commander Capt. Darren Green wrote in a letter to Freeman.
MSP credited Freeman’s quick response with helping ensure the safety of both the trooper and the suspect.
