N.C. detention officer dies after suffering medical emergency

BAYBORO, N.C. — A detention officer with the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office died after suffering a medical emergency in the line of duty, according to Officer Down Memorial Page.

On Dec. 6, Sgt. Russell Jones was trying to subdue an inmate when he was punched in the face, ODMP reports. Fifteen minutes later, Jones collapsed and was later pronounced dead.

According to Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis, Jones joined the sheriff’s office in June 2019. He completed his DOCC certification that same year and recieved his North Carolina General Detention Officer certification in July 2020.

Jones is survived by his mother and two sisters.

“Officer Jones demonstrated unwavering commitment to serving his community and fellow officers. He will never be forgotten,” Davis said in a statement.
