ATTICA, N.Y. — Attica Correctional Facility was on lockdown following a series of violent incidents inside the prison, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced on social media platforms.
The violence includes “incarcerated against incarcerated incidents” as well as assaults against staff. One correctional officer was stabbed “numerous times,” officials said, and another suffered “serious injuries to his face.”
Acting Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello III ordered the lockdown, the statement issued Tuesday said. There is a “full facility search” underway.
Corrections officials said that the violence began with assault among inmates.
Corrections officials are working with State Police and other local law enforcement.
The search was expected to last several days. Corrections officials said they intend to pursue criminal charges in connection with the violence.
Attica is a maximum security prison for men in Wyoming County .
Attica was the scene of one of the most infamous prison uprisings in U.S. history in 1971, when more than 1,000 inmates took over the overcrowded prison. Forty-three people died, most of them after state police stormed the prison to retake control.
