LA GRANGE, Ky. — Sgt. George Ramirez, a Kentucky Department of Corrections officer, was killed in the line of duty while driving to an off-site post.
Ramirez, 36, was traveling from the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange on March 10 when the crash occurred, according to WHAS. He was driving to a hospital in Louisville to guard an inmate.
The Kentucky Department of Corrections described Ramirez as a dedicated officer who served the department with “integrity and an unwavering commitment to the safety of both our institution and the community.”
“For nearly seven years, Sergeant Ramirez served this department with dedication, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the safety of both our institution and the community,” the department said in a statement. “His loss is deeply felt by his corrections family, friends and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
Ramirez was a devoted husband to his wife, Laken, and a loving father to their 4-year-old son, Soren. According to his obituary, he was born in Chicago and later moved to Indiana, where he met his wife. In 2018, Ramirez began his career with the Kentucky Department of Corrections after moving to Kentucky to help care for his wife’s grandmother.
A GoFundMe has been set up to assist Ramirez’s family with funeral expenses and financial support. The fundraiser describes him as a dedicated public servant who put his family first.
“As we all mourn the sadness and passing of Sergeant George Ramirez, he was only 36 years old, who tragically lost his life the evening of March 10, 2025, while driving to an off-site post,” the fundraiser states. “He was a loving husband and father. He leaves behind his beautiful family, including a wonderful wife, who stays at home to care for their beautiful little four-year-old boy.”
In honor of Ramirez’s service, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on March 20.
