LAKESIDE, Colo.— A teenager who stabbed a correctional officer in the Lakeside area, while in youth services’ custody and at a dental appointment, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Juan Ocegueda, 18, was sentenced Friday in Jefferson County District Court for the May 31, 2022, stabbing, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Ocegueda, at the time of the incident, was 17 and was in the custody of Platte Valley Youth Services in Greeley. Ocegueda was at a dental appointment, with a Division of Youth Services security specialist who was known to him, when the stabbing occurred.

The victim, a 52-year-old youth services employee, was stabbed multiple times in his arm, abdomen, shoulder and neck. He has since taken early retirement because of the attack, according to the DA’s office.

On May 1, Ocegueda, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and a crime of violence sentence enhancer. Additional charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Ocegueda, who is deemed a violent offender by the court, faces sentences in two other criminal cases, one on July 13 in Weld County and the other on July 31 in Larimer County.
