ALBANY, Ga. — The irate mother of a Dougherty County Jail inmate will be in the same facility for a while after she was accused of firing a gunshot in the facility’s parking lot.

According to the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Shatereian Walker, 43, entered the lobby at the jail at about 8:06 p.m. on Sunday to make a complaint. While an employee was calling for a shift supervisor to handle the complaint, Walker reportedly walked back outside.

“She walked out to her car and got a 9 mm pistol and fired a shot into the air,” Capt. John Ostrander, who oversees jail operations, said.

In addition to the pistol, officers recovered an unloaded shotgun in Walker’s car, Ostrander said. The mother’s complaint was that jail officers had beaten her son during an incident at the facility.

“By the way, there was no incident,” he said. “Apparently, he had told her some things that were not true. He has been in jail for about a week. We went back and checked; there was no incident involving her son.”

No one was injured, and there was no property damage at the jail. One shell casing was found at the scene.

After the shot was fired, sheriff’s personnel locked down the lobby and contacted 911. Officers from the Albany Police Department and Dougherty County Police Department responded and arrested Walker.

She has been charged with two counts of crossing a guard line with weapons, disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm on property of another.

A Dougherty County Magistrate Court judge set a bond of $1,000 for the disorderly conduct charge but was not able to set bond for the felony charges.

A bond hearing before a Dougherty County Superior Court judge will be held for the more serious charges at a later date, Ostrander said.
