SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Prison officials in South Dakota say their pleas for information about inmate James Vernon McVay were ignored for nearly two months by the Nebraska Department of Corrections.
McVay now is being held in Wisconsin for killing 75-year-old Maybelle Schein of Sioux Falls by slashing her throat just two days after he was put into the community transition program because he was compliant with his Individual Program Directive, which allowed him to avoid a parole hearing. McVay says the killing was the first step in a plan to assassinate President Obama.
But at the time of the transition, McVay had been at the South Dakota penitentiary for only 50 days, most of which were spent in solitary confinement. State officials had little information of his time in Nebraska where he spent the bulk of his sentence, including that he had threatened Vice President Joe Biden.
