CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — An employee with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has been indicted in connection with the April shooting death of a prison guard during a training exercise in Pickaway County.

Pickaway County Common Pleas Court records show David Pearson, 44, of West Chester, is charged with one count of negligent homicide, a first-degree misdemeanor. Pearson was indicted on July 12 and is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 7, records show.

According to WBNS Channel 10 , Pearson is a special operations officer for the ODRC. He has been on administrative leave since the shooting death of Lt. Rodney Osborne. Osborne died after being shot in the chest at the Corrections Training Academy in Orient in Pickaway County.

Osborne worked with ODRC for 13 years at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Scioto County. He was part of the prison’s honor guard and a member of the special response team and the statewide special tactics and response team.

“The incident appears to be a tragic accident but is being investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol,” said ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith in a statement in April to the Columbus Dispatch.
