CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released additional information on the Christmas Day incident at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe that led to the death of Corrections Officer Andrew Lansing.

According to the Highway Patrol’s initial investigation report released late Friday, Patrol Sgt. Bobby Brown was notified at 7:57 a.m. Wednesday of a corrections officer suffering an apparent heart attack in the parking lot of the prison. In that call, he was told that the officer was being taken to the Adena Regional Medical Center and that patrol officers were to relieve the Ross County Sheriff’s Office deputies who had also traveled to the hospital.

Upon arrival, Brown learned from a Union Township EMS paramedic that they had to perform live-saving measures on Lansing, 62, which revived him with a weak pulse. He also learned that Lansing had not suffered a heart attack but had instead been assaulted, leaving him with severe head trauma and what an MRI scan eventually showed to be a brain bleed. Lansing later succumbed to his injuries.

The Highway Patrol has since named Rashawn L. Cannon, 27, of Lima as the suspect in this incident, but charges have not yet been filed. According to the initial investigation report, a blood-stained white sock belonging to Cannon was taken as evidence. Cannon was transferred that same day to Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. He had been serving a minimum eight-year sentence on an assault charge stemming from an August 2022 incident on Prospect Avenue in Lima.

According to Highway Patrol Sgt. Bridget Matt of the Office of the Superintendent Public Affairs Unit , the investigation of this incident is continuing and the patrol has been working with the Ross County Prosecutor’s Office from the onset. Once the investigation report is finalized, Matt said, the prosecutor’s office will be provided a copy for the purpose of filing charges.
