ST. LOUIS — An 18-year-old was charged with assaulting a corrections officer and stealing the officer’s car to escape from a juvenile detention center, the St. Louis-Post Dispatch reports.

The juvenile offender has been at large since the April 1 attack at the state-run Division of Youth Services detention center, according to the report. He was recaptured on July 23.

The corrections officer reported to investigators that the juvenile shoved her, causing her to fall and hit her head. While she was on the ground, the juvenile and another detainee took her car keys, cell phone and backpack, according to police. The juvenile offenders then escaped in the officer’s SUV.

The juvenile has been charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault, escape from confinement, stealing a motor vehicle and second-degree robbery, according to the report.

The offender is now in St. Louis County custody and being held without bond, according to the report.
