PEARL, Miss. — A 21-year-old Mississippi inmate with just four months remaining on his sentence will serve an additional 40 years behind bars after a failed prison break, starting this week.
Shunekndrick Huffman was set to be released last December when he busted out of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in August 2022, broke into a home and held three hostages at gunpoint.
The convict stole one of the victims’ cars, which he crashed before being arrested again, when cops found him hiding in a garbage dumpster a few miles from the prison he escaped, Jackson station WJTV reported.
Huffman pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping and was sentenced to another six decades in state custody Monday — four of which will be spent in prison.
The perp was charged and sentenced to a seven-year term followed by probation in October 2019, but was slated for early release when he made his 2022 break. Several people on social media wondered what prompted Huffman to attempt an escape when he was so close to being freed. He will likely spend the rest of his life under some form of supervision.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections said on Facebook it planned to fine tune its siren system to prevent future risks to the community following Huffman’s ordeal. A malfunctioning alarm is blamed for the chaos that surrounded Huffman’s breakout.
