SAN JOSE, Calif. — About 50 people marched Friday in protest at Santa Clara County Main Jail to demand inmates be protected from abuse at the hands of the guards.
On Thursday, three jail guards were arrested a week after an inmate, later identified as 31-year-old Michael James Pipkin Tyree, was found dead in his cell of multiple blunt trauma, authorities said.
Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. James Jensen has identified the deputies as Rafael Rodriguez, Jereh Lubrin, and Matthew Farris. As the district attorney reviews the cases for possibly murder charges, activists called for those charges to be filed.
District Attorney Jeff Rosen has until Tuesday to file charges or the three could be released.
Activist Raj Jayadev with Silicon Valley De-Bug said the group came out to let inmates inside know there are people on the outside who support them.
