NEW YORK — A correctional officer on her way home from working a double shift stopped to assist a man who had just been in an accident.
The MidHudson News reports that Michelle Crapanzano was driving across the Robert F. Kennedy Brdige on July 24 when she spotted the man standing next to a vehicle that was engulfed in flames.
Crapanzano pulled over and convinced the man to get into her vehicle. By the time she reached the toll booths, emergency vehicles were responding to the crash site.
“What this officer did took real courage,” Corrections Commissioner Joe Ponte said.
Crapanzano works at the Rose M. Singer center on Rikers Island, a facility that houses the city’s female inmates.
