BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 18-year-old Buffalo man who attempted suicide early Sunday morning while under detention in the Erie County Holding Center died late Monday afternoon in Buffalo General Hospital.
Rakim E. Scriven, who was arrested Aug. 19 on a series of charges including robbery, was found in his cell at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday hanging from a bedsheet. His stepmother told The Buffalo News on Sunday that they thought Scriven might just be brain-dead, but a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said Monday evening that Scriven had died. An autopsy was to be conducted, but probably not until sometime today.
It was the third serious suicide attempt in the county’s jail this year. The jail has been under fire from the U.S. Justice Department, which sued Erie County, demanding better conditions for inmates at the downtown holding center and the correctional facility in Alden.
