N.C. bill would see correctional officers get concealed carry permits

Officers are reporting a growing number of threats from prison gangs

RALEIGH, N.C. — A new legislative proposal would grant North Carolina correctional officers the right to concealed carry permits.

WUNC reports that officers are reporting a growing number of threats from prison gangs who claim to know personal details of officers and of their families.

“This is one measure we can take to ensure police officers can protect themselves and their families when they’re off duty,” said Sen. Shirley Randleman, who sponsored the bill.

Prison officials with the Department of Public Safety have been lobbying for legislative support to improve working conditions for correctional officers, and Gov. Pat McCrory requested lawmakers set aside funding to raise correctional officers’ pay.
