UTAH STATE PRISON — Forty-two maximum security inmates began a hunger strike at the Utah State Prison on Friday, hoping to use it as leverage for a list of demands, corrections officials said.

The strike began Friday morning when inmates refused their breakfasts, said Brooke Adams, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections. All 42 are “documented gang members,” Adams said in a prepared statement.

The group reportedly hopes gang leaders in maximum security will be released from that part of the prison as a result of the strike.
