CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — A jail inmate has died after falling from the second floor inside the Montgomery County jail.
A family member told The Leaf-Chronicle in Clarksville that 53-year-old Barry Wade Hobbs fell Monday night. Hobbs’ brother-in-law, Roy Constible of Powell, Tennessee, said he was told that Hobbs suffered a massive brain injury, a broken back and crushed knees.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jamie Dexter confirmed the fall and said Hobbs died Tuesday night at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Dexter said the case is under investigation but that it appears Hobbs jumped from the upper level of a cell block pod. Dexter said the walkways have only rails on the sides, and Hobbs went over the rail.
Hobbs had been in jail since Friday after failing to appear in court.
