SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio — Inmates at the Shelby County Jail have been purchasing e-cigarettes from the jail commissary for the past two years.
According to WDTN, the e-cigarettes help cut down on contraband, and also help discourage violence among the inmates. The county jail believes they’re the only one in the state to offer e-cigarettes to inmates.
The e-cigarettes also bring in money; the jail made $17,000 in 2014 on sales of the e-cigarettes.
Inmates are OK with the product, and jail staff like them because they’re made by Crossbar, a company founded by a correctional officer who designed the e-cigarettes to be safe for the jail environment.
