CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. – Following the death of a 22-year-old college student, the Chatham County Jail has altered its policy regarding surveillance cameras and restraint chairs.
As of June 10, following the death of Matthew Ajibade, the jail’s new policy requires that any use of a restraint chair be videotaped and documented, according to WTOC.
The policy also dictates that at no time will an inmate secured in a restraint chair will be placed outside the vision and supervision of staff; all use of the restraint chair must be reported immediately to the watch commander and unit manager.
Ajibade was found dead after he was left alone in a restraint chair inside the jail. Nine deputies were fired in connection with Ajibade’s death.
