LONGVIEW, Texas — Four jailers and one deputy from Gregg County, Texas, received the Life Safety Award for stopping an inmate from committing suicide.

On Dec. 19, Jailers Doug Williams and Mason Stith, working in the control room, noticed inmate Kristian Causey attempting to commit suicide in a medical cell by hanging himself with ace bandages that had been placed on one of his legs.

They alerted available officers to the incident in the cell; Deputy Jarrod Alexander, Jailer Demarcus Johnson and Jailer Michael Pierce immediately responded. They stopped Causey from carrying out the suicide attempt by cutting the bandage from around the inmate’s neck and releasing the knot.

Causey survived and did not sustain any major injuries.

The Life Safety Award is given to officers whose extraordinary action saves the life of an individual.
