MANCHESTER, N.H. — A city woman wanted on theft charges was arrested Friday in Manchester after walking into the Valley Street jail to apply for a job.

Manchester police said the woman, identified as Kristina Hoefs, 31, of Manchester walked into the Valley Street jail on Friday to apply for a job. While applying, jail staff realized Hoefs was wanted out of Maine on a theft related offense, and she was placed into custody without incident.

“In my 32-year career here, this is a first,” said Valley Street jail Superintendent Dave Dionne.

Dionne said Hoefs came in to apply for a job as a corrections officer.

As part of the process, applicants go through an “initial screening” phase, where a completed application is reviewed for availability, neatness and qualifications. After an application is reviewed, jail staff makes a determination on whether the applicant is eligible for further testing.

If eligible, job seekers are given a written, basic aptitude test - required for all correctional officers - covering problem solving, personality traits and writing skills.

“The next step involves a background check,” said Dionne. “She came in, we asked for permission to conduct a background check, and she was rather nonchalant about it.”

Dionne said the background check turned up information that Hoefs was wanted out of Maine on a theft related offense.

“Manchester police came in, asked her if she was Kristina Hoefs, then asked her if she wouldn’t mind stepping outside,” said Dionne. “Next thing I know they are taking her away in the paddy wagon. Never seen anything like it before. She didn’t seem surprised.”

Hoefs was transported to police headquarters, and scheduled to appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester Monday afternoon.
