PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Sweet home Alabama, where the inmates make a brew.
A sheriff at Autauga Metro Jail outside of Montgomery said he caught the inmates attempting to ferment veggies to make some booze Monday, local TV news station WSFA reported.
The drink brewed up by the inmates looked “disgusting,” Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger said, according to the station. He called the drink -- uncovered during a sweep of the premises conducted by 25 officers -- a sort of homemade wine.
Sedinger said that he wouldn’t punish the enterprising prisoners.
But their discovery might put a stopper on any boozy July 4 reveling.
“We stopped serving fruit years ago, because the inmates would try to make wine,” Sedinger said, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. “This is the first time we have seen it with vegetables like this. When we poured it out into the toilet in the cell it looked liked someone had thrown up.”
