ELYRIA — Deputies and a drug-sniffing dog found 14 grams of cocaine hidden in an inmate’s pants at the Lorain County Jail last week.
The cocaine was allegedly found in the waistband of inmate Obed Sanchez’s pants Friday, according to a news release from Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti. Corrections officers were searching for narcotics inside the medium-security men’s housing area of the jail, aided by Maggie, a police drug-sniffing dog.
The release said Maggie indicated the presence of drugs in the bunk of Sanchez, but no drugs were found. Sanchez, 32, was searched, and two small bags of cocaine were found in a sock wrapped in his waistband, police said.
Supervisors are investigating how the drugs were brought into the facility. Jail Administrator Andy Laubenthal said it appeared that proper pat-down and showering procedures were performed on Sanchez when he was admitted to the jail. Laubenthal said the drugs might have been concealed in a body cavity.
