CORINTH, Miss. — After a plethora of contraband items were discovered at Alcorn County jail, the MDOc decided to suspend the housing of inmates until “drastic policy changes” are made – displacing 240 inmates.

According to WREG.com, contraband included cell phones, knives, razors, drugs, and even jail keys, indicating security at the facility isn’t where it should be.

“It appears to simply just be a ‘free for all’ that was going on at the Correctional Facility,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering.

Pickering said Thursday’s action was the result of an ongoing investigation into serious policy violations including prisoners being able to change clothes and leave the jail at will. They have also reportedly worked on private property and even crossed state lines.

“You want them to be readily identifiable as a prisoner. You do not want them, even in trustee status, working on private property. There are numerous allegations,” said Pickering.

The investigation is ongoing and it’s unclear if any charges against staff will be made.
