WINDSOR, N.C. — An inmate has been charged after murdering a Bertie County corrections officer.
Craig Wissink was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Sgt. Meggan Lee Callahan, WAVY reported.
Callahan and her colleagues responded to a situation near Wissink’s cell Wednesday afternoon. Authorities said when officers arrived at his cell, Wissink attacked Callahan. She died shortly after the incident.
Officials did not say if Wissink had a weapon, but told WAVY that they “will do all we can to support her family as well as the correctional family. The department will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation as well as conduct its own internal investigation.”
According to WITN, Wissink was transported to Central Prison pending his court date. No bond was set.
Court records show that Wissink had multiple infractions on his prison record, including interfering with staff, disobeying orders and fighting.
An investigation is ongoing.
