Today is the 80th anniversary of the opening of Alcatraz, the most escape-proof prison ever built. After all, it is situated on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay! But three prisoners in 1962 used an arsenal of contraband items to put that reputation to the test and escape.
It’s not certain if Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris did escape – certainly, no one has seen them since. Most came to the conclusion that they drowned in the waters surrounding the prison in an attempt to reach the mainland.
What we do know, or at least have, are pieces of the plan they put into motion to fly the coop.
