SAN FRANCISCO — A new study of the 1962 escape of three inmates from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary claims they may still be alive, if they timed their exit correctly.
Yahoo! News reports that a group of Dutch hydraulic experts decided to see if they could solve the mystery while they were modelling San Francisco Bay to study flood risk and the impact of sea-level rise.
They simulated dozens of possible routes the inmates – Clarence Anglin, John William Anglin and Frank Lee – could have taken on the night of their escape and found that they could have found shelter on an outcrop near the Golden Gate Bridge.
Of the 14 escape attempts made on Alcatraz Island, only the Anglins and Lee were unaccounted for. Others were either recaptured or died.
After a 17-year investigation, federal authorities concluded that the men most likely drowned. The FBI maintains that it has no credible evidence that the men are alive in the U.S. or overseas.
