A new History Channel program points to a new theory about two of Hillsborough County’s most notorious sons — the Anglin brothers, who escaped in 1962 from the island prison of Alcatraz never to be seen again.
“Alcatraz: Search for Truth,” debuted last week and shows again at 9 p.m. Saturday.
It tells the story of three men — Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin — who drilled holes in the wall of their cells using a vacuum motor, placed papier-mâché heads in their bunks to trick the guards, and apparently slipped into San Francisco Bay for the swim to shore.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons declared the trio drowned, but no bodies were found and the incident grew to become one of the most famous escapes in history.
