BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A former Alabama correctional officer is speaking out about harsh conditions that he believes put officers at risk and create a hopeless environment for inmates.

The officer asked us to not use his name and to conceal his face during an on-camera interview. He worked as a correctional officer at Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery County and occasionally worked overtime at Tutwiler Prison for Women. The officer, who we’ll call John Smith, said he worked for ADOC for 10 years and left in 2014 to pursue a different career in another state.

Smith described unsanitary conditions including leaks, mold and mildew, raw sewage, exposed wires and out-of-service bathrooms, that he says continued at Kilby during his 10 years on the job.
