Video: Inmate attacks Ky. jail deputy shortly after being convicted of murder

Timothy Delehanty struck a Kenton County deputy just hours after being sentenced for a 2006 murder

COVINGTON, Ky. — Newly released body camera and surveillance video shows the moment a convicted murderer assaulted a deputy at the Kenton County Detention Center — an attack that happened the same day he was sentenced to life in prison.

The attack happened in August 2024, just hours after Timothy Delehanty was sentenced for the 2006 murder of Paul Clayton and the attempted murder of another inmate, WXIX reports. Prosecutors say Delehanty requested a shower, then suddenly struck the deputy in the face. The videos, released April 1, show the struggle that followed before staff were able to restrain him.

The deputy sustained minor injuries, according to Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders, but dealt with dental pain for several days following the incident.

Delehanty’s trial for the deputy assault began on March 31. He was found guilty of assault with a persistent felony offender enhancement and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Because he is already serving a life sentence, the new time won’t extend his incarceration.

Sanders said Delehanty was combative throughout the legal process — cursing at the judge and prosecutors, and initially refusing to leave his cell in Eastern Kentucky. He was eventually transferred to Kenton County, but his behavior continued to disrupt the courtroom.

“We eventually had the trial without Mr. Delehanty present in the courtroom because he was refusing to behave himself and refusing to participate in the proceedings,” Sanders told WXIX.
