PORTLAND, Ore. — A 23-year-old man is accused of lunging at a sheriff’s deputy in the downtown Portland jail with a handcrafted weapon made out of six plastic sporks bound together with plastic wrap.

Nathaniel Xavier King-Collins is accused of attempted first-degree assault, two counts of attempted second-degree assault and attempted assault of a public safety officer.

The alleged assault occurred about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Multnomah County Detention Center as sheriff’s deputy Eric Reid opened the door to Module 4C.

King-Collins was caught on video lunging towards Reid and attempting to strike him in the eye with a white object, Multnomah County deputy district attorney Alex Hargrove wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

The deputy was struck in the face but the improvised weapon missed his eye and grazed his cheek, the prosecutor wrote in the affidavit. Other deputies responded and placed King-Collins in handcuffs.

The object he attempted to stab the deputy with was made of six plastic sporks bound together with plastic wrap and an instant coffee wrapper, the affidavit said. A search of the inmate’s cell turned up a second, similar weapon, Hargrove wrote in the affidavit.

King-Collins was arraigned in court on the allegations Thursday afternoon. He faces other pending charges of robbery, theft and criminal trespass and fourth-degree assault from two unrelated cases issued last year. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

He’s due back in court on Friday.
